My first ever royal iced cake

This isn't really my kind of cake, I'm not really into making replicas of real things.
I made this for one of my Dad's oldest friends, he's 80 and still working almost full time as a painter/decorator. Apparently he thought it was an actual tin of paint, which is cool - I wasn't so forgiving of its faults! It was my first time attempting to royal ice a cake as opposed to sugarpasting, I wanted straight, high, smooth sides and it didn't turn out too badly. You know how when it's your work all you see is little imperfections? This cake is one of those for me. Anyway, here it is in all it's not perfect glory!

Silhouette Engagement Cake

I love this cake! It was so much fun to make and I really like the way it turned out. The silhouettes were cut from flowerpaste, from a template.
The colours turned out really well, I found it quite hard to come up with an idea - to begin with every sketch ended up looking like a mini wedding cake, but I got there in the end!

It's been a while...

3 months or so even! I haven't been doing a lot of cakes recently, we had a big push to finish laying our oak flooring before Christmas & it's looking great now.

This cake was for my gorgeous god-son's first birthday, he is so lovely. He had a lovely day & so did we!

It was a quick one really, the boat is made from flowerpaste as are the fish. I love making cakes like this, so much fun.

Happy new year guys!

Really Chocolatey Birthday Cake

Our house smelled AMAZING while this cake was sitting on the worktop. The icing is chocolate, as are the roses, fans and other decorations. The only bits that I didn't make from chocolate were the hearts.

I designed this for my sister-in-law's 30th birthday instead of a gift. I'm never quite sure what to buy for people, hopefully this was a good substitute. The top tier was Baileys chocolate, the bottom was just chocolate mud cake with white chocolate frosting.

I loved making this cake - it was finished earlier than usual too which means I'm working faster. Typically though it's been really warm here for the past few days and all the chocolate + heat Do. Not. Mix. I was cutting out petals, putting them in the fridge. Thinning petals, putting them in the fridge. Rolling the centres, putting them in the fridge. You get the picture - there was a lot of waiting for things to chill! Next time I do a chocolate cake it will (hopefully) be in December.

I should be back next week with something else. Apologies for the sporadic posting - I only post when I have something pretty to talk about.
